Q: How long does paver sealing last before it needs to be redone?
A: Generally, a high-quality paver sealing job will last around 2 to 3 years in our Perth conditions. In areas with heavy foot or vehicle traffic, or full sun exposure all day, the sealer may wear closer to the 2-year mark. In lighter traffic or shaded areas, it could last longer, even up to 4 years. You’ll know it’s time for a refresher seal when you notice the pavers beginning to lose that water-beading effect or slight sheen. We offer maintenance sealing – a single refresher coat – at a lower cost than the initial full service, since preparation will be easier the second time around if done within a few years.
Q: Will sealing stop weeds from growing between my pavers?
A: Sealing significantly reduces weed growth, but it may not eliminate every single weed forever. The process of re-sanding and then sealing the joints hardens the sand and makes it difficult for seeds to penetrate or germinate. It also makes the surface less hospitable by reducing the moisture that weeds love. Most customers find that weeds are drastically less of a problem after sealing – any that do appear are usually on top (not rooted deep) and can be plucked or swept away easily. For best results, we always recommend starting with clean joints (we can power wash out existing weeds beforehand). Remember, some windblown seeds might sprout on top of even sealed pavers, but they won’t get deeply rooted.
Q: Do sealed pavers require special cleaning or maintenance?
A: Sealed pavers are actually easier to maintain than unsealed ones. Routine sweeping and the occasional hose down will handle most dirt. If you do get a spill (like oil or wine), it’s best to clean it sooner rather than later – even though the sealer will prevent immediate absorption, timely cleanup keeps the surface pristine. Use mild soapy water for any spots if needed; avoid harsh chemicals that could wear the sealer. We also advise against using a high-pressure washer directly on sealed pavers at very close range, as it could gradually erode the sealer – but normal rainy weather and garden hose pressure is fine. Overall, you’ll find maintaining sealed pavers is straightforward.
Q: My pavers are very old and faded. Will sealing make them look like new?
A: Sealing will definitely improve their appearance by enhancing the color that’s there and giving a cleaner finish, but it has its limits. Faded pavers (especially old concrete pavers that have lightened over many years) will darken a shade when sealed, often revealing more of their original tone. Many clients are pleasantly surprised at the revival. However, sealing isn’t painting – it won’t change the color entirely or cover severe discoloration. In cases of extreme fading, we can discuss color-enhancing sealers or stains as an option to restore color before sealing. But for typical aging, expect a sealed surface to look brighter, richer in color, and have a nice refreshed look, even if not 100% “brand new.” Most importantly, it will be protected going forward.
